In the fall of 2001, Dick Wolf launched the third spin-off from the LAW
AND ORDER franchise - CRIMINAL INTENT. From its inception, LOCI was the "geekier
younger brother" of the triumvirate. The show charted new territory by
changing the central focus from the arrest and prosecution of criminals
to their psychological motivations and the profiling required to catch
and convict the villains. Vincent D'Onofrio was specifically targeted by
Wolf and head writer Rene Balcer to play the role of Det. Robert Goren,
a quirky, Sherlock-Holmes style detective who is an expert in psychological
profiling.
Goren is teamed with Det. Alexandra Eames (played by Kathryn Erbe),a no-nonsense former vice-squad detective who balances his more cerebral approach with her street-wise experience. The two are supervised by Captain James Deakins of the Major Case Squad (Jamie Sheridan) and all report their cases to the Assistant D.A. Ronald Carver (Courtney B. Vance).
The D'Onofrio RoundTable will offer synopses and background information on
each individual LOCI episode along with reviews and critical essays from both
our members and third-party sources. In addition, we will track character development
and the major themes presented by the show. A section will also be dedicated
to the writers and production staff in order to showcase their background and
talents. When possible, links to external sites and resources will be provided.
